SingPost commemorates 50 years of National Service with stamp issue

SingPost’s NS50 stamp set, including Collector’s Sheet
Issuance Date: 14 March 2017

SINGAPORE, 13 March 2017 – Singapore Post Limited (SingPost) will release on 14 March 2017 a new set of stamps commemorating 50 years of National Service in Singapore (NS50).

The stamps celebrate key milestones of National Service since its introduction in 1967. These include the passing of the National Service Bill in Parliament on 14 March 1967, enlistment of the first batches of full-time National Servicemen into the Singapore Armed Forces, the Singapore Police Force and the Singapore Civil Defence Force, and introduction of the Open Mobilisation System. Founding Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew and former Minister for Defence, Dr Goh Keng Swee, who were instrumental to the introduction of National Service, are featured as well.

Over the past 50 years, National Service has fulfilled Singapore’s critical need for defence and security, safeguarding the peace and stability on which Singapore has been built. It plays a pivotal role in nation-building, providing the foundation for economic growth and a strong, cohesive society.

National servicemen form the backbone of the Singapore Armed Forces, Singapore Police Force and Singapore Civil Defence Force. By the end of this year, more than one million Singaporean men would have served National Service and passed through this distinctive rite of passage.

The set of NS50 stamps comes in five denominations: 1st Local in two designs, 70¢, 90¢, $1.30, and $2.

Pre-cancelled First Day Covers affixed with the 1st Local, 70¢, 90¢, and $1.30 stamps will be available for purchase at $4.45 each. Pre-cancelled First Day Covers affixed with the $2 miniature stamp sheet will be sold at $2.85 each. Sales of the First Day Covers will be extended to 19 March 2017. Presentation Packs containing the complete set of stamps are priced at $7.70. A Collector’s Sheet is available at $4, comprising two $2 stamps that feature embossed portraits of Mr Lee and Dr Goh, set against a backdrop containing an excerpt of Mr Lee’s speech at the sending off dinner for the first batch of full-time National Servicemen.

The stamp issue will go on sale from 14 March 2017 at all post offices and the Singapore Philatelic Museum. They may also be pre-ordered and purchased online at
